Behind the lens is a post about me

Who is Joe Josland and what makes him the photographer he is today you ask? Well, I’m a family man more than anything. I love days out with my fiancé and the kids. Day’s at the beach and enjoying some good food.

I don’t take enough family photos if i’m quite honest. I must try harder to make it an everyday thing, documenting family life for years to come. The walls of our house are filled with photographs of us as kids, days out, the rest of the family and those that are no longer with us. But there is always room for more.

We love food in this house, most of our days out are planned around food! I love to cook and Megan does the baking.

Izzy (a few days away from being 10) has showed an interest in photography for some time, so for her birthday we got her a camera and some lenses and a promise to print photos off each month.

Freyja is 3 and a cheeky little girl always making us laugh, full of life and fun. I love it when she says “i’ve got a good idea…” and then walks off!

Megan is an events manager in London who loves to bake and paint. I’m not sure how she puts up with me tickling her and generally being irritating but she does and I’m lucky for it.

I’m a photographer (obviously) and when i’m not shooting weddings i’m photographing food with some of the best chefs around. I also spend plenty of time doing computer-y bits and pieces making stuff work, or trying to.

We love a holiday, whether its going to Norfolk to see my family or abroad on an adventure seeing new places and again, eating the food!

We’ve bought ourselves a beautiful Edwardian terraced house built in 1903 and we’ve spent most of the pandemic making it ours, enjoying our new home and garden.

If I could go back in time I think i’d spend less time worrying about what cameras and lenses I had and more time making photographs. GAS (gear acquisition syndrome) plagued me once, but I think i’ve got my focus back again.

To the future me I say, enjoy the time and the make the memories. Most importantly, document them so we can enjoy the moments for the rest of our lives. Don’t leave the photos on computers and phones, print them and get them on the wall.
